Life Science Seminar - What's in a Lab? Chemistry vs. Bio
Join us for the first Life Science Seminar of 2024 scheduled for Thursday, May 23rd at Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals corporate office in Scripps Ranch.
This event will consist of an in depth look at the differences between Biology and Chemistry labs, with insights provided by the architects and project managers who build them, as well as the tenants who utilize the space. Greg McClure, AIA, from Delawie will be moderating, and Mike Barbera from Intersect Management, and James Bassett from Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals, and Jamie Prevost from Prevost Contrsuction will be our panelists for the session.
The seminar portion of the event will run for about 40 minutes and will be followed by a tour of the facility and inside look at some of the highly specialized equipment utilized in the space. BOMA’s Education Committee will be hosting the networking portion, which will include fun games and a chance to win great prizes.
This event is free and open only to property managers, assistant property managers and entry-level property management professionals.
Meet the Guest Speakers
Mike Barbera, President at ISPE and Intersect Management
Mike Barbera began his project management career over 28-years ago, overseeing mission critical manufacturing and R&D projects in the semiconductor industry. The past 21-years have been spent managing countless projects in the life science sector. Mike worked as an executive leader and project manager for Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. where the delivery of high-profile redevelopment and tenant improvement projects for companies like Eli Lilly and Fate Therapeutics paved the way for him to manage Alexandria’s ground-up headquarters in Pasadena, CA. In 2017, Mike left Alexandria to start Intersect Management, a boutique owner’s rep project management and commercial real estate consulting firm. Partnered with his wife Angie, the firm prides itself on offering a relationship-based approach to project management, with unprecedented market and technical knowledge. With a resume in highly technical markets, Mike and Intersect Management call, as some of their clients, companies like Alexandria Real Estate, Charles River Labs, Element Bio, Rampart BioSciences, Illumina, Millipore, and Vividion. Mike has been a longstanding member of ISPE and is currently serving as ISPE San Diego’s chapter President.
James Bassett, Facilities Manager at Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals
James' career in the research industry spans over two decades in the facilities management and engineering field. He has held a series of progressively responsible roles across prestigious organizations in the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors. James began as a Field Service Technician at Getinge North America, where he honed his technical skills for eight years. Subsequently, he transitioned to roles as a Lead Service Tech at Scientific Services Plus and a Senior Facilities Tech at Pacira Pharmaceuticals, gaining valuable experience in facility operations. His career then progressed to leadership positions, including as a Facilities and Plant Operations Lead at Pacira BioSciences, Inc., where he oversaw operations for over four years. He further showcased his expertise as a Senior Facility Engineer at Grifols and Illumina, contributing to the efficient functioning of facilities. Most recently, he excelled as the Chief Facility Engineer - Pfizer at Amentum, managing operations with distinction. Currently, James is the Facilities Manager at Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals where he continues to demonstrate his commitment to excellence in facility management.
Jamie Prevost, President at Prevost Construction
With over 30 years of industry experience and 3 million sq. ft. of life science projects completed, Jamie Prevost leads Skyline's Life Science practice area. Jamie leverages his expertise to assist clients during the due diligence process by providing strategic and collaborative preconstruction insight. Since the early 2000’s, Jamie has led the construction of 60+ labs and over a dozen adaptive re-use projects. During his leadership of San Diego based Prevost Construction, Jamie grew revenues from $10 million to $100 million before being acquired by Skyline Construction in 2022. With offices in San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, and now San Diego, Jamie leverages established project teams and existing customer relationships to serve the surging demand for life science construction expertise. With his knowledge of the unique constraints associated with adaptive reuse and traditional life science tenant improvements, clients often lean on Jamie and his team for feasibility studies during the site selection process to provide reliable cost and scheduling information for major redevelopment efforts. With an emphasis on lean construction techniques and a partnership mindset, project teams under Jamie’s leadership deliver superior results with an emphasis on providing a best-in-class customer experience.

Greg McClure, LEED AP BD+C, Principal at Delawie
Greg McClure, LEED AP BD+C, with more than 20 years of architectural experience, leads Delawie’s Science + Technology market sector as a Principal of the firm. McClure is one of the region’s leaders in sustainability working on projects of various types and sizes, including several large commercial projects in Southern California. He has experience designing for and working with multiple developers, including: Sterling Bay West, BioMed Realty, BioScience Properties and Lincoln Properties. In addition, McClure leads Delawie design teams through numerous tenant laboratory projects for clients such as BioLegend, Revvity, Illumina, Exagen, Encodia and Nitto Denko. McClure also leads Delawie projects for higher education clients bringing industry best practices to the area’s colleges and universities. A licensed architect in California and North Carolina, McClure has a Bachelor of Architecture from Virgina Tech.
