Meet the Speakers
Benjamin Yan, Vice President of Acquisition and Asset Management for Sterling Bay West

Ben oversees all aspects of Sterling Bay West’s real estate portfolio in San Diego. He is responsible for managing acquisition, development, asset management, and disposition. Prior to joining Sterling Bay, Ben supported all aspects of acquisitions, asset management, and financing activities, totaling over $4.7 billion in transaction volume for KBS, an institutional investment management firm.

Marshall Wheel, Director of Development Services for Sterling Bay West

Marshall oversees all aspects of Sterling Bay West’s real estate developments. He is responsible for the oversight of all phases of a project from early due diligence through project closeout. Prior to joining Sterling Bay, he worked at Stanford University for almost 10 years, managing projects within the Stanford research park.

Alessandra Lapadula

Ms. Alessandra Lapadula, LEED AP is currently one San Diego’s highest profile construction leaders, helping to lead the construction efforts for the Pacific Mesa project in Sorrento Mesa for Sterling Bay West. Her past projects include the UC San Diego’s Design & Innovation Building, which serves as UC San Diego’s new “front door” of the La Jolla Campus, along with the UC San Diego Epstein Family Amphitheater project and public realm serving both projects. Ms. Lapadula joined the BNBuilders’ team in San Diego in 2016 as a Senior Project Manager, and immediately became a crucial leader for the construction of Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ San Diego Research Center. Ms. Lapadula also spent numerous years handling complex projects at Stanford University, including the $160-million Huang Engineering Center and Nano Center for Science and Technology, and The Clark Center, a $100-million facility for wet and dry labs and a vivarium.  

Ms. Lapadula has 23 years of industry experience. In her senior project management role, she oversees developments from pre-construction to close-out, manages the entire project team, and serves as a key liaison between the owner and other stakeholders. She is also responsible for mapping out schedules, budgets, and subcontractors for new pursuits. As a committed leader, Ms. Lapadula is an expert communicator and manager, helping to ensure the success of her entire team. She earned her bachelor's in Civil Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and her master's in Civil Engineering / Construction Management from San Jose State University.

Ryley Poblete, Sciences Leader, Senior Associate at Gensler

As a Regional and Global Sciences Leader, Ryley leverages his strategic and planning experience with innovation ecosystems, as well his time working with various life science, technology, academic, and research institutions to address their specific needs and challenges at a variety of scales. On the conceptual design side, he starts with the concepts that drive the project and create holistic workspaces for sciences users. On the realization side, he brings knowledge from years of experience in repositioning, development of sciences buildings, academic and institutional spaces, and fit out for research and life sciences environments.

He earned his Professional Bachelors of Architecture from University of Houston, and continued his education at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He has remained active in the alumni communities, and advocated for STEM education.
