BOMA AND THE BEES - VIRTUAL AUGUST MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Join BOMA San Diego's Programs & Seminars committee for the August Membership Meeting on Monday, August 22 from 11:30 - 1:30 p.m via Zoom Conference. Join us as we get up close and personal with the top beekeepers in the nation, Alveole, and their lead beekeeper strategist, Blake Retter.

Attendees will learn the following:

  • The importance of bees in the natural world - AND the human world
  • The threats bees are facing globally today
  • How we can support bees in general, and how urban buildings are uniquely positioned to do so
  • How biomonitoring can help all bees and tell us about the state of the environment around us
  • A look at some impactful installations here in San Diego and how you can get involved
In addition to the educational virtual meeting, the committee will be raffling off a $150-200 valued gift basket with Alvéole goods – candles, soaps, lip balms & seed packets. Alvéole will be donating the basket to a lucky winner.

A special thank you to our August Membership Meeting event sponsors: ABM, GuardTop, South Shore Building Services, and SDG&E

MEET BLAKE RETTER:
Blake is the Global Beekeeping Strategist for Alvéole, an urban beekeeping company that installs beehives on buildings across North America. He leads the beekeeping field support team for the B Corp’s 39 beekeeping teams from coast to coast, overseeing strategic planning, training, and beekeeping logistics. With a background in education and outdoor manual labor, Blake joined the Alvéole hive in 2016 with a dream of turning his lifelong love of insects and pollinators into a meaningful career connecting people to the natural world.

ABOUT ALVÉOLE:
Alvéole installs beehives on rooftops in cities across Canada, the United States and France, and uses the hives as a way to educate businesses, organizations, and schools about the environment and food systems. It’s a turnkey service, meaning they provide all the care and maintenance the bees need to thrive.

Their service includes a hands-on educational program where people participate in workshops to learn all about the role and impact of bees and pollinators on our everyday lives. At the end of the season, they harvest the extra honey produced by the bees and give it all back to their clients in jars with their own official logo, which they then share with their community and network to further spread awareness.

Alvéole's goal is to make people fall in love with bees, which in turn will make them fall in love with nature, completely changing their sense of responsibility towards the environment. As a social company, they operate on the profound beliefs that hands-on education leads to inspiration, which in turn leads to action, and that change starts in cities.

The social company has been certified B Corp since 2018, a testament to its efforts in generating positive economic, social and ecological impacts. Alvéole is determined to use business as a force for good, as well as a force for change.
