Join BOMA San Diego's Programs & Seminars committee for the February Membership Meeting on Friday, February 3 from 11:30 - 1:30 p.m. We will honor the annual Public Official of the Year Award winners, introduce and swear in the 2023 Board of Directors and set the foundation for BOMA's path to Building Resilience in the coming year.

The Public Official of the Year Award is given to local and state representatives that exemplify extraordinary leadership on issues of relevance and critical importance to the commercial real estate industry in the San Diego region.

After careful consideration by the BOMA San Diego Board of Directors and on the recommendation of the BOMA San Diego Government Affairs Committee, the Board has unanimously awarded the honor of “Public Official of the Year” to Congressman Scott Peters, Assemblymember David Alvarez, and City of San Diego Councilmember Chris Cate.

Meet the Public Official of the Year Award Winners

Scott Peters

Congressman Scott Peters has a reputation for being a bridge builder and bipartisan leader in in Washington D.C. A vocal advocate for San Diego’s life sciences and tech community, Peters increased research funding to the tune of $8 billion and led opposition to the harmful “Innovation Act,” which would have put San Diego universities, tech companies, and inventors at an extreme disadvantage by negating their ability to readily garner patents. Peters is also a strong supporter for San Diego’s military community. Peters is also responsible for securing nearly $450 million to upgrade the San Ysidro Border Crossing, a project that improves the flow of trade and commerce into San Diego.  He was also instrumental in securing funding for the now open and operating “Blue Line” trolley extension to UTC.

David Alvarez

While he has only served on the State Assembly since June of this year, David Alvarez has already made a tremendous impact. Alvarez played a critical role in defeating arguably the most threatening bill to BOMA and its members, Senate Bill 1105. If passed, the so-called “San Diego Regional Equitable and Environmentally Friendly Affordable Housing Agency Act,” would have created a new agency with the authority to raise taxes and place measures on the ballot without any additional oversight, including “linkage fees” that would be applied to commercial construction.  Already in his short term in office since the special election in June, Alvarez has been available to his constituents, including meeting with a contigent of commercial real estate professionals during this year’s California Commercial Real Estate Summit in August.  BOMA San Diego’s representatives who were a part of that visit appreciated his willingness to engage on issues and dialogue on solutions.

Chris Cate
BOMA San Diego recognizes the tenure of Chris Cate and his efforts to support the economy, jobs creation and the commercial real estate community. Elected to the City Council in 2014, Councilmember Cate became the first Asian-American to hold a council seat in nearly 50 years. During his eight years of service, Councilmember Cate championed fiscal responsibility as Chair of the Budget & Government Efficiency Committee, advocated for more public safety resources, and led on bold civic initiatives like the effort to expand San Diego’s Convention Center and the measure to raise the Midway/Sports Arena height limit. The Councilmember also played an integral role in exposing incorrect water billing and was a driving force behind the designation of the Convoy Area Cultural District.  He also has been a driving advocate behind updating community plans to accommodate our region’s housing needs, as well new policies to help streamline government and reduce costs to constituents.
