We are excited to welcome Shari Joyce, one of our newest members, to BOMA San Diego! Shari is the Director of Business Development at Scientific Testing Technologies and recently moved back to San Diego after nine years. She enjoys gardening and recently joined the Community Service Committee. Read more about her below!

BOMA San Diego: What is your role/responsibility at Scientific Testing Technologies?
Shari: I am the Director of Business Development at Scientific Testing Technologies, which is a new part-time position as of June 2021. My boss, Bob Friedman and I go way back and worked together previously. My main goal is to arrange site surveys with building owners and property managers for the building’s common areas. We then prepare a proposal based on our findings. Our slip testing services help companies protect themselves from potential litigation and high workers’ compensation claims.

BOMA San Diego:
What type of work do you do?
Shari: One of the first things I was tasked with was selecting and implementing a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform to best manage, monitor and track interactions. I am the admin for the CRM and I contact potential clients to establish a relationship and educate them on STT’s method of floor testing for clients to utilize in their safety programs. We put a testing plan in place to protect employees and visitors to their buildings and reduce liability exposure to the owner.

BOMA San Diego: Tell us about your family and pets!
Shari: I moved back to San Diego in May after being gone for nine years. I lived in Clairemont previously for 17 years and then moved to The Woodlands, TX to be near my children and grandchildren. I came back here to be near my aging parents and other family members. My sister and I have purchased a small place together in Oceanside. The last pets I had in Texas were two pugs named Oreo and Cookie. Can you tell I love sweets?!

BOMA San Diego: What was your first role and what ultimately got you interested in this field?
Shari: My first facility related job was for a small Sanitary Supply company and for some reason I enjoyed stripping and waxing floors and demonstrating auto scrubbers, buffers, etc. I then went to work for Waxie in Arizona for 8 years and then worked for a Building Service Contractor and a Clean Room Disinfection company here in San Diego. After that I was Sales Manager for a waste and recycling company in San Diego. In The Woodlands, I am Operations Manager for a Home Inspection company.

BOMA San Diego: What are your top three goals for joining BOMA San Diego?
Shari: 1. Meeting and networking with professionals in Building and Facility careers.
2. Being part of a professional organization with a community service involvement.
3. I like to be kept informed on trends, forecasts and updates affecting the commercial real estate industry to better understand the daily challenges of the property managers I serve.

BOMA San Diego: What Committees have you joined or are interested in joining?
Shari: I have joined the Community Service Committee. One of my passions is being of service. It is difficult for me now, living in Oceanside, to volunteer as much as I would like with BOMA.

BOMA San Diego:
What is your favorite part of the workday?
Shari: Morning. It is when I am most productive and creative. I get up at 5:15am M-F and look forward to sleeping in on weekends.

BOMA San Diego: What is a book you read that you would recommend?
Shari: “Dare To Lead” by Brene Brown. Leadership is not about titles or the corner office. It’s about the willingness to step up, put yourself out there, and lean into courage. This book supports my belief: We have to be vigilant about creating a culture in which people feel safe, seen, heard, and respected.

BOMA San Diego: What is a hobby you do outside of work?
Shari: Gardening. I have an amazing yard and have been learning all about growing various fruits and flowers. This season we had strawberries, raspberries, watermelon and cantaloupe. We also have several Banana Trees and two Tangerine Trees. My favorite flowers in the yard are the Canna Lilies.

We are happy to have you Shari and we are excited for your involvement!
