San Diego’s 37th Mayor was named BOMA San Diego’s 2023 Public Official of the Year. Mayor Todd Gloria is one of the few two-time winners of the award.
The Public Official of the Year award is given to a local public official who has demonstrated excellence and leadership in their respective position and exhibits support for issues of concern to the commercial real estate industry.
In Mayor Gloria’s case, his efforts in 2023 were extensive.
From homelessness to housing for all San Diegans, from development permit process improvements to getting tenants back in their office, to making our streets “sexy” and prioritizing infrastructure, Mayor Gloria’s leadership on these issues, and others, was recognized by the BOMA San Diego Board in making this decision.
Of specific note was his direction to create a self-certification process for tenant improvement permits. BOMA, among others, was leading the charge to help improve the processing times for development permits, and, specifically, tenant improvement permits. Beyond self-certification, the Mayor has also been leading the charge to fully staff the Development Services Department, train new staff and managers, and outsource some review and approval functions so city staff can focus on more complicated permit applications. With these actions, BOMA’s members have seen marked improvement.
The Mayor noted in his remarks at the annual awards lunch, that this is not the end, but merely the continuation of his efforts to make the city’s processes more efficient.
The Mayor is a third-generation San Diegan of Filipino, Dutch, Puerto Rican, and Native American descent. Prior to being elected San Diego’s Mayor, he was a City Councilmember, an i-Mayor, filling in as Mayor after the former Mayor resigned and an Assemblymember.
The BOMA San Diego Government Affairs Committee makes the recommendation on the annual nominee to the Board of Directors. The Committee meets monthly on the 3rd Monday of the Month at noon. If you have interest in joining, please contact BOMA San Diego’s legislative advocate craigb@calstrat.com.
