Leadership Spotlight – Sonia Miró of Kearny Real Estate Company
Sonia Miro grew up in Lakewood, California, and later moved to San Diego to attend San Diego State University (Go Aztecs!). Upon graduation, Sonia decided to make San Diego her home. She started her career as a property manager back in 1986 after five years of working with a developer where she did entitlements, build-to-suits, leasing and managing of their office buildings. For the past three years, she has worked for Kearny Real Estate Company managing one of downtown San Diego’s most recognizable buildings – the Emerald Plaza.
Sonia is one of BOMA San Diego’s most recognized leaders! She’s been a member for 25 years. She earned the prestigious Principal Member of the Year award in 2019 and currently serves on the board of directors as our chapter’s secretary. On top of that, Sonia participates as a member of the Government Affairs Committee and is the liaison to the Community Service Committee.

BOMA San Diego: How would you describe your leadership style?
Sonia: My leadership style is to lead by example and action. I love to inspire others; mentor and encourage my team; and have an open-door policy with a positive outlook. I believe in being firm but fair with everyone I get the privilege to work with, and strongly believe in the teaching principle of “give someone a fish, they eat for a day, but if you teach someone to fish, they eat for a lifetime.”
BOMA San Diego: How do you encourage creative thinking within BOMA, especially with the committees you are involved with?
Sonia: I love to encourage creative thinking by throwing out ideas, encouraging others to think outside the box and expand on their ideas, and by supporting others so that their ideas can come to fruition. I’m a strong believer that stifling creativity is the death of growth and achievement.
BOMA San Diego: How do you respond to criticism?
Sonia: I try to own my mistake, see the other person’s point of view and then practice the ‘lessons learned’ philosophy in order to identify that ‘teachable moment’ for my personal growth. Then I go have a big tall glass of wine! (kidding, not kidding). Only through my mistakes can I become more successful.
BOMA San Diego: Let’s get personal – some of our members know that you’re a talented singer and guitar player. We’ve also heard that you are in a band! What is the name of your band, what’s your role, and what other instruments can you play?
Sonia: LOL, well shucks. I’ve been performing in various bands for about 20 years; I play acoustic guitar, electric guitar (in fact, I won my red mahogany US Stratocaster electric guitar at the Denver BOMA conference in a Rock Band contest! LOL) piano, synthesizer and percussion instruments. I played in a 9-piece, 50s - 60s cover doo-wop band called The Wingtips for about 6 years, and have played in the Johnny C Band all over North County for about 12 years. I mostly do solo gigs at private dinner parties, wine tastings, and fundraisers; my genre is classic acoustic rock.
