Amanda Joachim of LandCare achieved BOMA rockstar status! Her rise up the BOMA San Diego leadership ladder is impressive. She joined our Chapter in late 2019, a few months before the Country went into the pandemic lockdown. As a new BOMA San Diego member, Amanda worked diligently on her committees to help create virtual programming (including the Annual Supporting Partners’ Meet the Manager series and the Membership & Emerging Professionals’ Associate Download on Zoom). These programs helped to keep our members engaged while most worked from home in 2020. In 2021 and in 2022, she earned a spot on the Board of Directors as a Member-At-Large/Committee Liaison and served as the vice chair and chair of the Special Events Committee. For all her hard work and contributions, Amanda was awarded the 2021 Ray Magnussen Associate Member of the Year Award and the 2022 Chairperson of the Year award!
Read the interview below to learn more about Amanda:
BOMA San Diego: What is your leadership philosophy?
Amanda: Collaboration! I am lucky to work alongside some amazing individuals and to utilize their strengths and talents [which] I believe, only helps enhance and improve our goal as an association. We are better together!
BOMA San Diego: Who do you look up to for mentorship?
Amanda: I feel lucky to have many mentors in my life but the one who inspires me the most and always encourages me to pursue my goals and passions is my husband. His steadfast demeanor is something I admire and try to emulate. He’s always reminding me “patience is a virtue” and to continue to learn and grow with any success or obstacle I face.
BOMA San Diego: You were on the fast track for BOMA Leadership since day one in 2019. What motivated you to become a BOMA Leader (sub-chairperson, chairperson and board member)?
Amanda: Other amazing BOMA Leaders. This organization is made up of hard-working, driven, successful, passionate individuals and I knew I wanted to be a part of that. I am also passionate about education and advocacy and love what BOMA does and represents for the commercial real estate industry.
BOMA San Diego: How do you keep your Committees motivated despite conflicts and obstacles from a Board Liaison perspective?
Amanda: It goes back to collaboration. I like to think conflicts and obstacles are just different perspectives or insights into a situation and I try to motivate the Committees to see it that way too. With that additional information, I believe we only end up better and stronger in the end.
BOMA San Diego: How do you continue to grow and develop as a leader?
Amanda: To constantly push myself out of my comfort zone. Growth means change and change is stepping out from the known to the unknown.
BOMA San Diego: I heard that you are stepping off the Board of Directors after this year. What is your BOMA goal for 2023?
Amanda: To get involved with new committees! There are so many cool committees out there and I can’t wait to explore them and get involved.
BOMA San Diego: What is your most significant accomplishment in BOMA?
Amanda: I hope it’s been encouraging new and old members to get involved, voice their ideas, take on leadership roles, get out of their comfort zone and make an impact.
BOMA San Diego: How do you deal with stressful situations?
Amanda: I try to not let the stressful situation(s) take control…sometimes that’s easier said than done. But my goal is to always stay calm, make sure I have a clear understanding of the situation, have all the information, and find the solution! I believe every problem has a solution, it might just take a few tries to get it right but with some creative thinking, time and help from others it can be resolved!
BOMA San Diego: Books, podcasts, music or all of the above. What’s on your read/listen list these days?
Amanda: Does a Netflix mini-series count? I just finished “From Scratch” on Netflix. If you haven’t watched it, add it to your list… just make sure to have a box of tissues with you!
BOMA San Diego: What inspires you?
Amanda: My wonderful family and exploration – my passion is traveling and immersing myself in different cultures and communities. It’s always a humbling experience and I walk away having learned something new and feeling so fulfilled.
Thank you for being an inspirational BOMA Leader, Amanda!
