(SAN DIEGO) January 14, 2021 – The San Diego Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA San Diego) awarded its 2021 Public Official of the Year Award today to a trio of City of San Diego leaders: Council President Dr. Jennifer Campbell (District 2), Councilmember Chris Cate (District 6), and Planning Director, Mike Hansen.

San Diego’s leading commercial real estate organization bestows the annual award to public officials that exemplify extraordinary leadership on issues of relevance and critical importance to the commercial real estate industry in the San Diego region.

“In a year of uncertainty, these three civic leaders remained steadfast in their commitment to championing smart planning, more housing, and job creation,” said Amber Molina, president of BOMA San Diego. “They kept their sights on the future and worked to ensure that all voices were represented on issues that will impact San Diego’s for many years to come.”

Councilmember Dr. Campbell and Councilmember Cate each were recognized for their bi-partisan vision and effort in writing, promoting and successfully passing “Measure E” to lift the height limitation in the Midway Community of the City of San Diego. The award reflects their vision, leadership, and bipartisanship in securing support for a catalytic change to this important area.

Mr. Hansen received the award in recognition of his leadership of the Planning Department and his team’s efforts to promote and develop community plan updates including the communities of Midway, Mission Valley, Morena and Kearny Mesa, as well as innovating planning tools, like the “Complete Communities” program adopted by the City Council this past fall. These efforts will lead to a better, more environmentally sustainable connection between jobs and housing and in a manner that is incentivized through zoning.

Previous BOMA San Diego Public Official of the Year Award recipients include former San Diego Council President Georgette Gomez; former Assemblyman and now Mayor of San Diego Todd Gloria; former Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer; San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher; former Councilmember Tony Young; former City of San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders; California State Senator Ben Hueso; Councilmember Vivian Moreno and former Senator Christine Kehoe, among many other distinguished members of the San Diego community.
