BOMA 2024 Year in Review: Driven for Success

As the year comes to a close, we reflect on an incredible 2024 under the theme Driven for Success. Together, we’ve navigated challenges, celebrated milestones, and strengthened our community in San Diego’s commercial real estate industry. This year’s accomplishments have set the stage for an exciting 2025, where our new theme, Thriving Through Challenges, will inspire us to tackle obstacles head-on and emerge stronger.

Government Affairs: Advocacy in Action

BOMA San Diego achieved significant advocacy milestones this year. The Government Affairs Committee blocked the proposed real estate transfer tax from reaching the ballot, ensuring financial stability for property owners. They also championed a tenant improvement self-certification program, streamlined permitting processes like “Permit Now,” and renewed outsourced permit processing to reduce delays. Their efforts further led to a homeless encampment ban, improving conditions in San Diego’s business districts and creating a more welcoming environment for tenants and visitors. In addition to these local efforts, the committee worked closely with BOMA California and BOMA International to address state and national issues, amplifying their impact and ensuring alignment with broader advocacy goals.

Financial Success: Exceeding Expectations

Thanks to disciplined budgeting and strategic event planning, BOMA San Diego surpassed its financial goals for 2024. The association maintained financial stability through membership retention efforts, successful sponsorship programs, and well-executed events. Highlights included standout performances such as Purse Bingo, which significantly outperformed expectations, and the Emerging Professionals Cornhole Tournament, which exceeded income targets. These successes underscore the collective efforts of committees and members in ensuring the financial health of the organization.

Special Events: Building Community

The Special Events Committee brought energy and creativity to every gathering, creating opportunities for members to connect and build community. The year began with a sold-out golf tournament, where sponsors and participants embraced San Diego-themed activities such as a mechanical wave and a baseball batting cage. Mid-year, the committee pivoted from the traditional Del Mar Races to a lively karaoke night at The Shout House, which was met with enthusiastic participation. The year concluded with the 2024 San Diego TOBY and Membership Awards Gala, where members gathered in their finest attire to celebrate the year’s achievements.

Programs: Connecting Members, Elevating Conversations

The Programs Committee delivered an impactful year of events, starting with January’s Membership Luncheon honoring Todd Gloria as Public Official of the Year and a Women in Business Interview with Teresa Henning. March featured a dynamic Women in Business panel, followed by April’s Interview Series with Stacy Kurko. In May, members explored San Diego’s next commercial frontier at a luncheon on the Pacific Center, while July’s Interview Series spotlighted Anastasiya Plotina. August’s luncheon focused on emergency preparedness with Josh DaFoe, and October featured Congressman Scott Peters discussing key regional developments. The year wrapped up with December’s Annual Meeting, highlighted by Erin Sur’s Enneagram workshop on self-worth and communication.

Education: Empowering Growth

BOMA’s Education Committee made significant strides in professional development by hosting highly attended Foundations of Real Estate classes. These classes, along with four additional courses designed to help members achieve their Real Property Administrator (RPA) designation, provided members with essential tools to advance their careers. By prioritizing education, BOMA has continued to foster excellence in property management and strengthen the skill set of its members.

Emerging Professionals: Rising Stars

The Emerging Professionals group proved to be a vital resource for new members of the industry, offering valuable networking and learning opportunities. The year kicked off with an info session and property tour led by industry experts, providing insight into the industry’s inner workings. The Cornhole Tournament at AleSmith Brewing exceeded expectations with a night of friendly competition and networking. The group capped off the year with a fireside chat featuring Stacy Kurko, whose wisdom and advice inspired attendees to grow their careers with confidence.

Emergency Preparedness and Sustainability: Making a Difference

The Emergency Preparedness and Sustainability Committees also made their mark with impactful initiatives. Annual blood drives hosted by property sponsors resulted in life-saving contributions. CPR and first aid certification training equipped participants with vital skills to handle emergencies. Sustainability efforts included a multi-group beach cleanup in collaboration with SDBEA and IFMA, fostering a cleaner environment and stronger inter-organizational partnerships.

Sponsorship: Driving Growth + Connections

This year, the Sponsorship Committee demonstrated exceptional achievements. The Property Manager Mixer continued to be a standout event within the BOMA community, fostering valuable connections among industry professionals. Most notably, the committee successfully increased revenue by securing new sponsors for the organization. These accomplishments highlight the committee’s hard work, creativity, and determination, paving the way for even greater success in the future.

Communications: Engaging Content

The Communications Committee continued to evolve its approach to member engagement, transitioning from print to dynamic social media content. Initiatives like Remember Monday, What’s New San Diego?, and Ask a Property Manager received positive feedback and kept members informed throughout the year. By creating fresh, engaging content, the committee enhanced BOMA’s visibility and member engagement.

Industry Collaboration

BOMA San Diego collaborated with esteemed organizations to host two standout events this year. In October, the Dynamic Duos Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, co-hosted with IFMA, IREM, and SDBEA, celebrated the power of partnership with creative, themed networking opportunities. In November, the BOMA & IREM Economic Forecast brought industry experts together to discuss the future of San Diego’s real estate market, providing attendees with valuable insights for the challenges ahead

As we prepare for 2025, we invite every member to embrace the theme Thriving Through Challenges.
