Reflections From the EP Seat: BOMA International Executive Committee

It’s been my pleasure to serve this year as the 2023-2024 Emerging Professional Seat on BOMA International’s Executive Committee. As 2023 comes to a close and I reflect on how the experience has been so far, I have some thoughts I’d like to share. As I’ve navigated the year with curiosity, it has been a joy to find my place – and my voice – on the Executive Committee. 

 

Converging on the capital, the committee met last month for the Fall Governance Meeting in Washington, D.C. These meetings are underscored by BOMA’s mission: to advance the industry through advocacy, influence, and knowledge. The work and strategic planning conducted at these meetings moves through this lens. As initiatives get worked on and discussions are had, I work to find ways to answer the question: how can I provide the perspective of an emerging professional to what’s at hand? In every discussion, I’m seeking ways to do two things: 1) Provide the Executive Committee with this perspective to keep the interests of the incoming generation of property professionals a priority in decision making, and 2) Represent emerging professionals at the regional and local level, bringing feedback to these conversations.

 

I find myself standing on these pillars because it is important to me that the new workforce continues to find ways to make a difference. It is important to push yourself out of your comfort zone, to show up, to pay attention, and take that seat at the table. The way that you can make a difference is to be in spaces where decisions are made. It’s critical to be involved to ensure you have a voice in times where decisions are shifting the industry and the standards for how we manage the built environment evolve. If one thing’s for sure, if it’s not you, it’s someone else and you can be sure others are weighing in on matters that affect us all.

 

Important progress is being made as BOMA continues to be a central resource to property owners and managers alike as demands of the built environment shift. I look forward to what’s ahead in 2024 for BOMA International and BOMA San Diego; there’s much to be had. I know that a fresh perspective is always needed, and I encourage anyone who’s interested in making an impact in their industry to take that step. It’s your voice that’s needed, make it heard.
