Section: Committee Announcements

Thanks to Chairperson Ryan Blum, BOMA’s Emergency Preparedness Committee got a first-hand look into the inner workings of San Diego’s American Red Cross Chapter on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 and we were impressed!

San Diego’s Red Cross Command and Call Center is so technologically advanced that it serves as the national fusion center to coordinate relief efforts for major disasters across the whole country, including Hurricane Sandy. The technology and methods used to coordinate major disaster relief are state of the art.

Compassion, Communication and Comfort

In just a single year’s time, San Diego’s Red Cross Chapter has:
  • Responded to 308 mainly disasters, including home fires, floods, storms, search and rescue, landslides, and hazardous material spills.  Did you know the Red Cross sets up campers at fire sites to provide emergency cooking, clothing, and counseling, to aid and comfort those suddenly bereft of all their valuables?
  • Served 2,832 meals, 4,680 snacks and beverages to nearly 2,000 first responders and people affected by disasters.
  • Trained over 45,000 people in Preparedness, Healthy & Safety classes and outreach programs.
  • Assisted more than 72,000 military members, veterans and their families, managing 36,000 call center messages and conducting over 300,000 calls.
  • Briefed over 41,000 service members and dependents for deployment.
  • Counseled over 36,000 mothers and children nutritionally each month at 26 Red Cross WIC* locations throughout San Diego County. (*Women, Infants and Children food and nutrition program)
Only 7% of San Diego County households are prepared for a large disaster, and 40% of small businesses never reopen their doors after a large-scale disaster! To remedy this, American Red Cross created PrepareSanDiego, a resiliency initiative backed by key community and business leaders including Mark Kersey, Marti Emerald, Ron Roberts, Dave Roberts, Jerry Sanders, SDSU, KPBS, SDG&E, and more!  Visit PrepareSanDiego’s helpful link to Get a Kit, Make a Plan, and Be Informedhttp://www.preparesandiego.org/BeRedCrossReady.aspx
