On October 18th, San Diego County Supervisor for District 3 Kristin Gaspar met with several members of BOMA San Diego’s Board and Government Affairs Committee for a meet and greet, as well as to discuss issues of mutual concern related to the County of San Diego.

Supervisor Gaspar first discussed the recently approved County pilot project for inmates with mental illnesses.  The program is based on the Stepping Up Initiative, which supplies Counties with resources to help develop and implement a structured plan intended to reduce the number of people in local jails with mental illnesses.  The County’s pilot project will be open to men who are currently in jail who suffer from mild to moderate mental
illnesses, and will consist of a treatment program of 12-step meetings, outpatient therapy and neighborhood support programs. Gaspar highlighted a recent visit to a similar program in Utah, where the positive results were apparent even during her short visit there. The main goal is for these types of programs to be able to track and evaluate progress of those enrolled and ultimately lead to successful rehabilitation and an effective transition back into society.

Supervisor Gaspar went on to discuss San Diego County’s ongoing efforts to update their Climate Action Plan. During her time as a Councilmember for the City of Encinitas, Supervisor Gaspar was deeply involved in the early adoption of the city’s Climate Action Plan in 2011. She mentioned how Encinitas’ successful adoption of the CAP was a direct result of the balance created between environmental stewardship and potential economic impacts and influenced many other municipalities around the County to adopt similar plans.  This experience will be key to managing the various interests involved in the County’s CAP.

Next up for Supervisor Gaspar is a networking luncheon event on November 8th where she will discuss the Live Well San Diego program and its impact on local businesses.  Live Well San Diego is a County of San Diego program designed to enhance and promote healthy, safe and thriving communities in the County.  For more information please visit the Live Well San Diego website (http://www.livewellsd.org/) and Supervisor Gaspar’s Third District website (http://www.supervisorkristingaspar.com/).
